Hong Kong Rediscovered:

A Decade after the Handover

After living in the U.S. for many years, Gretchen So returned to Hong Kong in 2007 to photograph it as an ardent observer. Change was the only constant since the Handover. Despite its continuous transformation, the spirit of Hong Kong persisted. Its people reconciled with and found harmony in their ever-changing surroundings. Gretchen sought beauty in urban desolation and people’s way of life behind the city’s economic success.

Through this project Gretchen So provides the audience with an updated view of how Hong Kong continues to evolve as the world’s most densely populated metropolis and the “second system” of China’s “One Country, Two Systems” model.
